  1. Cell
    • Basic unit of all living things
    • Prokaryotic
    • Eukaryotic
  2. Cell Theory
    • All ling things are composed of cells
    • Cells are the basic structure and function in living things
    • New cells are produced from existing cells
  3. 1.Prokaryotic
    2.Eukaryotic
    • 1. Generally smaller, Doesn't contain a nuclei
    • 2.Generally more complex and contains a nuclei
  4. Nucleus
Large membrane enclosed structure that contains DNA
  5. Organelle
    "Little organs"
  6. Cytoplasm
Portion of cell outside of nucleus, contains organelles suspended in cytosol
  7. Nuclear envolope
Surrounds nucleus dotted with pours that allow material in and out of nucleus
  8. Chromatin
    Granular material in nucleus
  9. Chromosome
Condensed chromotin that passes genetic info during cell division
  10. Nucleolus
Small, dense region in nucleus where ribosomes are assembled
  11. Ribosomes
Small particles of RNA and proteins found throughout cytoplasm
  12. 1) ER
    a) Smooth
    b) Rough
    • 1-Where lipids are assembled
    • 1a-Ribosomes are not found on the surface
    • 1b-Ribosomes are found on the surface
  13. Golgi Apparatus
To modify and sort the proteins that come from the ER
  14. Lysosomes
    • Small organells filled with enzymes
    • Used to breakdown un-needed material
  15. Vacuole
Structure that stores material such as water, salt, proteins, and carbs
  16. Mitochondria
Organelles that convert the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for cells
  17. Chloroplast
    Responsible for photsynthesis
  18. Cytoskeleton
    Structure that supports the cell
  19. Centriole
Located near nuclues and help to organize cell division
  20. Cell membrane
Thin, Flexible barrier surrounding all cells
  21. Cell Wall
Stong supporting layer around the membrane
  22. Lipid bylayer
The doubled membrane sheet surrounding cells
  23. Concentration mass of solute a given volume of solution
mass of solute a given volume of solution
  24. Diffusion
When the particle in a compact area move to a less compact area
  25. Equilibrium
When the concentration of solute is the same throughout the system
  26. Osmosis
Diffusion of water through selectively permeable membranes
  27. Isotonic
When 2 solutions are the same strength
  28. Hypertonic
When a solution is above the normal strength of a solution
  29. Hypotonic
When a solution is below normal strength.
  30. Facilitated diffusion
When the cell membrane helps the diffusion of glucose
  31. Active transport
Transportation of molecules against a concentration difference
  32. Endocytosis
Process of taking material in by the means of infoldings
  33. Phagocytosis
Procees where cell surrounds particle then engulfs it
  34. Pinocytosis
Process where pockets form along cell membrane and pinch off to form vacuoles within the cell
  35. Exocytosis
The membrane of a vacuole surrounds the materiall and fuses it with cell membrane forcing contents out of cell
  36. Cell Specializtion
Cells throughout an organism can develope to perform different activities.
  37. Tissue
Group of cells that perform particular functions
  38. Organs
    Many tissue working together
  39. Organ system
A group of organs working together
