- What is sustainability?
- Meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising ability of future generations to meet their needs
Define carrying capacity.
The number of individuals in a system that can be supported without deleting resources.
What three principles does sustainability depend on?
Solar energy, biodiversity, and chemical cycling.
What do scientists do?
They collect data and develop theories, models, and laws about how nature works.
What are the 4 baisc steps of the scientific method?
Observation, hypothesis, experiment, conclusion
Four features of the scientific process?
Curiousity, skepticism, peer review, and reproductivity.
What are the important biological compounds? Give an example of each.
- Carbohydrates (bread, starch, woof)
- Proteins ( beans, meat, tofu)
- Nucleic acids ( DNA and RNA)
- Lipids (fat)
How can matter change?
It can change either physicall or chemically.
What's the law of conservation of matter?
Matter only changes from one form to another.
What is energy?
The capacity to do work or transfer heat.
What types of energy are there? Give an example of each.
- Potential energy (Gasoline, water behind a dam)
- Kinetic energy ( wind, flowing water, heat)
If the wavelength in light is lower, the energy is ___________.
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
Energy is neither created nor destroyed, so energy input = energy output.
What is the second law of thermodynamics?
Energy use results in lower-quality energy. (heat loss)
