  1. Virus
    • nonliving particles that infect bacteria, plants and animals
    • contains either DNA or RNA that is required for replication
    • attacks the host by entering a target cell and using enzymes within that cell to replicate
  2. Antiviral Non HIV Drugs
    • Acyclovir, Famvir, Valtrex, Denavir
    • inhibit viral replications by interfering with viral nucleic acid synthesis in the cell
    • indicated for patients with influenza A and B, herpers species, cytomegavirus
  3. Acyclovir Sodium
    • herpes virus drug
    • interference with viral synthesis of DNA
    • fakes out the virus in thinking it is a component needed for continued synthesis of the DNA chain
    • indicated for HSV 1 & HSV 2, varicella zoster, epstein Barr virus
    • contraindicated to patients with hypersensitivity, renal/hepatic disease
    • can cause N&V, diarrhea, headache, tremors, lethargy, rash, pruritus, anemia, seizures, nephrotoxicity
    • Probenecid (gout meds) decreases elimination of acyclovir which can cause nephrotoxicity
