  1. Shoulder Flexion
Position: Supine or sitting, forearm in mid-position between supination and pronation. Thumb up.

    Stationary Arm: Mid-axillary line

Moveable Arm: Longitudinal axis of humerus head

Axis of Motion: inferior to acromian process.
  2. Shoulder Extension
Position: Supine-edge of table, sitting or prone

    Stationary Arm: Same as flexion.

    Moveable Arm: Same as flexion.

Axis of Motion: Same as flexion.
  3. Shoulder Abduction
Position: Sitting, forearm in supination (externally rotate arm during action).

Stationary Arm: Parallel to mid-line of body.

Moveable Arm: longitudinal axis of humerus

Axis of Motion: inferior to acromian process.
  4. Shoulder Adduction
Position: Sitting, arm move anterior to trunk

Stationary Arm: Parallel to mid-line of body

Moveable Arm: Anterior longitudinal axis of humerus

Axis of Motion: Anterior shoulder inferior to acromian process.
  5. shoulder external rotation
Position: Supine only, arm abducted to 90 degrees and elbow flexed to 90 degrees, forearm mid-position between supination and pronation.

    Stationary Arm: Parallel to table

    Moveable Arm: Along ulna

    Axis of Motion: olecranon process
  6. shoulder internal rotation
    • Position: Same as external
    • rotation

    • Stationary Arm: Same as external
    • rotation

    • Moveable Arm: Same as external
    • rotation

    • Axis of Motion: Same as external
    • rotation
  7. Elbow Flexion
    Position: Supine or sitting

Stationary: Lateral midline of humeral head

Moveable Arm: Lateral midline of radius

Axis of Motion: Lateral condyle of humerus
  8. Elbow Extension
    • Landmarks all the same as elbow
    • flexion
  9. Forearm Suppination
Position: Sitting, elbow flexed to 90 degrees

Stationary Arm: Parallel to horizon (table, floor)

Moveable Arm: Parallel to pencil held in person’s hand.

Axis of Motion: Mid-point of third proximal phalanx.
  10. Forearm Pronation
Landmarks are the same as supination
  11. Wrist Flexion/Extension
    subject is seated

    stationary arm: aligned with ulna

    Moveable arm: 5th metacarpal

    axis: triquetrum
  12. Ulnar Deviation/Radial Deviation
    sitting with forearm on table

    stationary: aligned with lateral epicondyle

    moveable: aligned with 3rd metacarpal
