  1. Solubility
The amount of a substance that will dissolve in a given volume of a solvent at a specified temperature.
  2. Viscosity
a measure of the resistance to flow of a substance at constant temperature.
  3. Surface Tension
a measure of the resistance to flow of a substance at constant temperature.
  4. Condensation
the conversion of gas to liquid.
  5. Intermolecular Force
any attractive force that occurs between molecules.
  6. Hydrogen Bonding
The attractive force between a hydrogen atom covalently bonded to a small, highly electronegative atom and another atom containing an unshared paired electron.
  7. Solution
a homogenous (uniform) mixture of two or more substances.
  8. Solute
a component of a solution that is present in lesser quantity than the solvent.
  9. Solvent
the solution component or solvent molecules from a region of high concentratiom to low concentration.
  10. Semipermeable membrane
a membrane permeable to the solvent but not the solute; a material that allows the transport of certain substances from one side of the membrane to the other.
  11. Thermodynamics
the branch of science that deals with relationship between energies of the system work and head.
  12. Exothermic Reaction
a chemical or physical change that releases energy.
  13. Endothermic Reaction
A chemical or physical reaction in which energy is absorbed.
  14. Specific Heat
The quantity of heat (calories) required to raise temperature 1 g of a substance 1 degree celsius.
  15. Kinetics
the study of the rates of chemical reactions.
  16. Activation Energy
the treshold energy that must be overcome to produce a chemical reaction.
  17. Activated complex
the arrangenment of atoms at the top of the potential energy barrier as a reaction proceeds.
  18. Catalyst
any substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction (by lowering the activation energy of the reaction) and that is not destroyed in the course of the reaction.
  19. Dynamic Equilibrium
the state that increases the rate of chemical reaction (by lowering the activation energy of the reaction) and that is not destroyed in the course of the reaction.
  20. Equilibrium Reaction
a reaction that is reversible, and the rates of the forward and reverse reaction are equal.
  21. Reversible Reaction
a reaction that will proceed either direction, reactants to products or products to reactants.
