  1. Mumps
    • Paramyxovirus (-) RNA
    • H, N, F
    • Spread by inhalation
    • Reproduces in URT -> viremia
    • Incubation period: 16-18 days
    • Sx: Parotitis, Fever
    • Duration: 7-10 days
    • complications: Orchitis, oorphitis, meningitis, encephalitis
    • Dx: Clinical picture, isolate virus
    • Prevention: MMR vaccine - live attenuated
    • Tx: supportive
  2. Measles
    • Paramyxovirus - 5-day measles, hard measles
    • Lacks N
    • Spread by inhalation
    • Suppresses IL-12 - decreases cell mediated response
    • Aggressive replication, lots of inflammation
    • Incubation: 9-11 days
    • Koplike spots: appear a few days before rash
    • Rash: head -> trunk -> extremities
    • Severity: High fever, delirium, Photophobia, conjuctivitis
    • Complications: Bacterial superinfection, encephalitis, death
    • Dx: Clinical picture, vral isolation
    • Tx: Supportive

    • Togavirus (+) RNA
    • German measles, 3 day measles
    • Subgenmoic RNA
    • Spread by inhalation
    • URT -> LN -> viremia
    • Incubation: 16 days
    • Sx: mild rash with fever
    • persists 1-3 days
    • Contagious 7 days before and after
    • Congential Rubella: Cardiac/ocular defects, thrombocytopenia, failure to thrive, mental retardation
    • Dx: Hemagglutination
    • Prevention: MMR, not given to pregnant women
    • Tx: supportive
  4. Erythema infectiosum
    • Parvovirus
    • 5th disease
    • slap face rash presist 1-2 weeks
    • Dx: clinical picture
  5. Roseola infantum
    • Herpes virus 6
    • Abroupt onset of fever, convulsions
