    • M Pneumoniae

    • Sterols acquired from host/medium

  2. Epidemiology
    • 10% of all pnuemonia cases
    • Droplet spread
    • Low infecting dose
    • 5-15 years (1/3 of all pneumonia in teenagers)
    • Common in closed communities
  3. Pathogenesis
    • Throchea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli
    • Attaches to cilia of bronchoepithelium
    • Mediated my P1 in tip attachment organelles which bind sialic acid
    • Causes loss of cilia and inflammatory response
    • IgA immunity
  4. Manifestations
    • Mild tracheobronchitis with fever, cough, headache, and malaise
    • Less severe thatn bacterial pneumonia (walking pneumonia)
    • Insidious onset
    • Dry cough
    • Unilateral/patchy pneumonia on x-ray
  5. Diagnosis
    • No gram stain, absence of organisms
    • serologic tests best
    • 4x rise in titers
  6. Treatment
    • Erythromycin, tetracycline
    • Shorten course of infection
