  1. Ectopic Pregnancy
    Fertilized ovum implanted outside uterine cavity
  2. Ectopic Pregnancy: Labs
    decrease in progesterone level ( < 10-15 ng/ml)

    Slow rise in hCG then gradually diminish
  3. Ectopic Pregnancy: Assessment Findings
    • Normal pregnancy symptoms
    • Amenorrhea or abnormal menses
    • Slight vaginal bleeding & unilateral pelvic pain
    • Abnormally low hCG titers
  4. What are the signs of a rupture in an ectopic pregnancy?
    • Sudden, severe abdominal pain radiating to shoulder
    • Shock with profuse hemorrhage
    • Boggy & tender uterus
    • Syncope, nausea, vomiting
  5. Ectopic Pregnancy: Nursing Care
    • Obtain serum hCG levels
    • Assess VS & monitor vaginal bleeding
    • Keep pt NPO
    • Monitor for hypovolemic shock
    • Administer blood transfusion (if needed)
    • –If Rh negative, then administer Rhogam
    • Pain control measures
    • Emotional support for loss of pregnancy
    • Possible methotrexate administration
