The flashcards below were created by user jl167968 on FreezingBlue Flashcards. What would you like to do?

  1. Which phase of cellular respiration yields fewest ATP? Where does it take place?
    Glycolysis; cytoplasm (anaerobic)
  2. Where does the complete breakdown of glucose occur?
    Mitochondria (aerobic)
  3. Carries oxygen to muscle from red blood cells
    hemoglobin
  4. Stores oxygen in muscles
    myoglobin
  5. Where are you at highest risk for oxygen deficiency?
    strenuous exercise
  6. What happens when there is an oxygen deficiency in the muscle?
lactic acid accumulates as an end product of anaerobic respiration (lowers pH in body)
  7. What is oxygen debt?
amount of oxygen that liver cells require to convert accumulated lactic acid into glucose, plus the amount that muscle needs to resynthesize ATP and creatine phosphate to their original concentrations
  8. What is muscle fatigue?
reduced ability or inability to contract muscles during strenuous exercise
  9. What usually causes muscle fatigue?
build up of lactic acid in the muscle
  10. What causes a muscle cramp?
lack of ATP to return calcium to sarcoplasmic reticulum, so muscle fibers cannot relax
  11. What is a theory to why muscles cramp?
decrease in extracellular Ca++ (electrolyte imbalance)
