  1. What are the symptoms of hypoglycemia?
    • Skin - Cool and clammy
    • Rapid shallow breaths
    • Diaphoresis
    • Change in Mental status
    • Weakness
    • Altered vision
    • Tachycardia
    • Hunger
    • BGM < 70
  2. What are the symptoms of hyperglycemia?
    • Skin - Hot and dry
    • Rapid, deep breaths (Kussmaul)
    • Dehydration
    • Fruity (acetone odor) breath
    • Hypercapnia, acidosis
    • N and V
    • Decreased neck vein filling
    • poor skin turgor
    • BGM >250
    • Keytones present
  3. What is treatment for mild hypoglycemia? (BGM 60-40)
    • Give 10-15g of carbohydrate (1/2 cup of OJ, 6 saltines, 1T hopney, 3 Grahm crackers)
    • Retest BGM in 15 min
    • Repeat above if necessary
    • Have snack if meal is more than an hour away
  4. What is treatment for moderate hypoglycemia? (BGM 40-20)
    • Treat with 15 to 30 g of rapidly absorbed carbohydrate
    • Take additional food such as cheese or lowfat milk after 10-15 minutes
  5. What is treatment for severe hypoglycemia? (BGM < 20)
    • Administer 1mg glucagon IM or SQ
    • Administer second dose in 10 min if patient remaions unconsious
    • NOTIFY primary care giver and follow directions
    • If still unconsious, transfer to ER
    • Give small meal when wakes up if no longer nauseated
