When drilling small holes, what can be used to make the material secure?
Vice or clamp
What is the function of the carpenters brace?
Carpenters brace makes large holes in wood
What are two types of drill bits?
- Fortsner drill bit
- Countersink drill bit
3 safety precautions when using a drilling machine?
- Wear goggles
- Have scrap wood underneath your work
- Secure your work in a vice
How is the material held when drilling holes over 10mm?
It should be held in a G clamp to fasten the work securley to drilling table
What precaution must be taken when drilling acrylic?
Put scrap wood under it
Name two materials that can be filed.
Acrylic and wood
Name and explain the two basic methods of filing.
Cross-filing; used to remove waste material and file down to a line. The file is pushed across the work.
Draw-filing; carried out using a smooth file to give a shiny finish. The file is pushed sideways up and down the edge
After filing how can the edge of acrylic be smoothed?
What is a linisher and what is it's function?
It smooths the faces of materials like acrylic and wood.
3 safety precautions when using a linishing machine?
- No small pieces can be smoothed
- Must be sanded when the work is on the table
Name the best glue for joining two pieces of acrylic together?
Name two safety precautions when gluing plastics?
- Replace lid immediatley after use
- Work in a well ventilated area
Why is the selection of the corrct type of glue for plastics very important?
If you choose the wrong glue, it can melt the plastic
Name another glue that could be used on acrylics?
Why are there different marking tools used for various materials?
They require different tools because it is the clearest to see on the material
What tool is best for marking out on plastic?
Spirit-based marker pen
Name the tool used to assist in drawing lines at the right angles on plastic and wood?
A try square
List 3 safety precautions when using a strip heater?
- Wear gloves
- Have your hair tied back
- Tie tucked in
5 steps on bending?
1. Mark the position of the bend, using a spirit pen or a chinagraph pencil
2. Switch strip heaater on. This is simply an electric fire element mounted below a narrow opening.
3. Place the bend line over the heat. Turn the work over every few seconds to ensure even heating.
4. The work soon gets soft along the bend line. Once it is soft, place it on some sort of former and hold it there until it cools
5. Once cooled, acrylic will stay bent. Remove line by rubbing it with metal polish.
Safety rules of files?
Always use with correctly fitting handle
After filing, name the next two processes?
Buffing and polishing
Which type of plastic would be suitable to manufacture washing up liquid bottles from?
Low density polystyrene
Why is acrylic used to make external signs?
Colourful and cheap
A manufacturer intends to make and sell electrical light fittings, such as plugs and light switches. Which tough plastic with a good looking surface would you reccomend?
Name one property of acrylic that may prove to be a disadvantage?
Scratches easily and breaks easily because it's thin
Name a suitable plastic used in the boat industry to make small rowing boats?
What is the main difference between THERMOSETTING and THERMO?
Thermosetting; resistant to heat. Once formed, can't be re-shaped.
Thermo; they can be reshaped multiple times when there is heat.
What is the 5 thermosetting plastics?
- Urea Formaldehyde
- Polyester Resin
- Melamine Formaldehyde
- Epoxy Resin
- Phenol formaldehyde
What is the 7 thermoplastics?
- Rigid Polystyrene
- Expanded Polystyrene
- Low Density Polythene
- High Density Polythene
- Rigid PVC
- Flexible PVC
