  1. Mechanism of Action;
    prevents muscles from contracting by prolonging time during which the receptors at the neuromuscular junction cannot respond to acetylcholine
  2. Indications?
    Required emergent intubation for airway protection with active gag reflex.
  3. Contraindications &Precautions;
    • Contraindications; Hx of malignant hyperthermia; penetrating eye injuries, glucoma, plasma pseudocholinesterase.
    • Precautions; severe burns, myasthenia gravis
  4. Route and Dosage;
    • IV: 1.5 mg/kg. May be given IM @ 2mg/kg; up to 3-4 mg/kg, max dosage 150 mg total. NOTE: Onset IV admin. 1-2 min., recovery 4-6 min; IM onset 2-3 min., recovery 4-6 min.;
    •  Peds 2mg/kg
  5. Adverse reactions and side effects;
    apnea, prolonged respiratory depression, arrhythmias, bronchial spasms, hypotension, inc. ocular pressure
