Mechanism of Action;
prevents muscles from contracting by prolonging time during which the receptors at the neuromuscular junction cannot respond to acetylcholine
Required emergent intubation for airway protection with active gag reflex.
- Contraindications; Hx of malignant hyperthermia; penetrating eye injuries, glucoma, plasma pseudocholinesterase.
- Precautions; severe burns, myasthenia gravis
Route and Dosage;
- IV: 1.5 mg/kg. May be given IM @ 2mg/kg; up to 3-4 mg/kg, max dosage 150 mg total. NOTE: Onset IV admin. 1-2 min., recovery 4-6 min; IM onset 2-3 min., recovery 4-6 min.;
- Peds 2mg/kg
Adverse reactions and side effects;
apnea, prolonged respiratory depression, arrhythmias, bronchial spasms, hypotension, inc. ocular pressure
