"The science of form." Morphology is another name for anatomy, which is, the study of the human body.
The study of body structure that can be examined with the naked eye. Large structures that you do not need a microscope to see.
Structures in a particular area of the body: chest, abdomen, head.
Anatomy of a particular system: nervous, vascular, skeletal...
Study of shapes and markings on the surface of the body to help determine what lies beneath. Counting ribs, finding veins, identifying vertebrae.
Microscopic anatomy. Tissues, cells, things you need a microscope to see.
Study of how structures change throughout their lifespan.
Study of how body structures form and develop before birth.
Study of structural changes in cells, tissues, and organs that are caused by disease.
Study of internal body structures by means of radiographs or other imaging techniques.
Study of functional properties of structures and the efficiency of their design.
Hierarchy of Structural Organization...
- Chemical level - atoms, molecules, macromolecules
- Cellular level - cells and cellular organelles ( subunit of cells )
- Tissue level - tissues - epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, nervous tissue.
These are the only kinds of tissue that make up all the organs in the body.
Four kinds of tissue...
Epithelial - covers the body's surface and lines its cavities.
Connective tissue suppports the body and protects its organs.
Muscle tissue provides movement.
Nervous tissue provides fast internal communication.
Classes of macromolecules...
- Carbohydrates ( sugars )
- Lipids ( fats )
- Nucleic acids ( DNA, RNA )
Organs are discrete structure made up of more than one tissue, most are made up of all four ( epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous ).
Organ systems are:
- Integumentary ( skin )
- Skeletal ( bones )
- Muscular ( muscles )
- Endocrine ( glands )
- Cardiovascular (heart, arteries, veins, blood system )
- Lymphatic ( wbc transport, interstital fluid removal )
