Beta 2 adrenergic agonist, prompt bronchodilation
A synthetic sympathomimetic that causes bronchodilation w less cardiac effect than epinephrine and reduces mucus secretion, pulmonary capillary leaking, and edema in the lungs during allergic reactions.
Bronchospasm, asthma, COPD, bronchial asthma, emphysema, reversible bronchospasm associated w chronic bronchitis
Hypersensitivity, symptomatic tachycardia
BP, pulse, ECG should b monitored, use caution in pts w known heart disease, elderly pts, lung sounds should b auscultated before & after administration
Other sympathomimetics, beta blockers may blunt the pharmacological effects of Albuterol
Albuterol side effects
Palpitations, anxiety, dizziness, h/a, nervousness, tremor, HTN, sweating, dysrhythmias, cp, n/v, tachycardia, cough, wheezing
Albuterol dosage & route
2.5 mg in 2.5 ml NS over 5-15 mins nebulizer; 1-2 sprays MDI (90-180 mcg); rotohaler: one 200 mcg rotocap should b placed in the inhaler & breathed by the pt

0.15 mg/kg in 2.5 ml NS by nebulizer
