  1. WORD ROOTS
    • Foundation of the medical term. Typically identifies a part of the body or color. Always keeps the same meaning.
    • 1. Found at the beginning of the medical term
    • 2. Term can have either ONE or MORE roots in most cases
    • 3. Tells us the body part involved main thoughts
    • Ex. Arthr => Joint
    • Derm or Dermat=> Skin
  2. WORD PARTS
    Suffix, Prefix, word roots
  3. COMBINING FORM
    When a root is combined with a vowel. The vowel is called the Combining Vowel. Usually an "O" and I,E.

    Root + Combining Vowel = Combining Form

    ex. Gastr/o = Gastr"o"
  4. COMBINING VOWEL
    Joining word roots to word roots or word root to suffix. Makes pronunciation easier.

    If the suffix starts with a vowel drop the "O"

    • Ex. Gastr/O with suffix Itis = Gastritis
  5. PREFIXES
    • Begining of the term when present
    • Not all terms have one
    • Number, Location, direction
    • Written with a hypen after the prefix (ante-)
  6. SUFFIXES
    • End of the term Ex. Ostomy
    • Each term must end with a suffix
    • One suffix per term
    • Suffix tells us if it's Procedure, Condition or Neither

    **written with hypen preceding the suffix
