    • destruction of myelin sheath by immune system
    • starts at legs & moves up (ascending paralysis)
    • may require mechanical ventilation
  2. Guillain-Barre' Syndrome-three stages
    • Acute or initial period-begins at onset and ends when no further deterioration occurs
    • Plateau phase-disease just "hangs around", doesn't get better or worse
    • Recovery phase-remyelination and axonal regeneration

    • get symptoms in chronological order
    • pain
    • cranial nerves: smile, frown, whistle, drink
    • speak
    • cough
    • increased WBC's and protein in CSF
    • respiratory function compromised
  4. Guillain-Barre' Syndrome-interventions
    • plasmapheresis-remove excessive plasma
    • IV immunoglobulin
    • DO NOT USE Corticosteroids
    • RESPIRATORY IS PRIORITY! Keep mechanical ventilator handy
