  1. H2 receptor antagonists (Blockers)
    • Uses: GERD, peptic/duodenal ulcers, dyspepsia
    • -used for stress uclers in hospitals

    ADE:blur, optic neuritis, ocular irritation, N/V/D, rash.

    Agents: Cimetidine (Tagamet), Ranitidine (Zantac), Famotidine (Pepcid)
  2. Antacids
    Uses: Gastric acid irritation

    ADE: Electrolyte imbalance, toxic electrolytes in renal impairment, constipation, diarrhea

    • Ca2+: mixed with other antacid ingredients
    • Al3+: constipation
    • Mg3+: diarrhea (milk of magnesia)
  3. Metoclopramide (Reglan)
    Uses: Reflux esophagitis, duodenal ulcers, gastroparesis

    ADE: CNS effects, diarrhea, constipation, unspecified visual disturbances.
  4. Proton Pump Inhibitors
    Uses: GERD, gastric/duodenal ulcers, dyspepsia.

    ADE: blur, optic neuritis, irritation, dry eye.

    Agents: "prazole's" Omeprazole (Prilosec - OTC), Lanoprazole (Prevacid), Esomeprazole (Nexium), Pantoprazole (Protonix), Rabeprazole (Aciphex)
  5. Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome
    MOA: Anti-inflammatory

    • Agents: Mesalamine (Asacol) - ASA asprin prodrug, eye pain, vision abnormalities.
    • Olsalazine (Dipentum) - blur
    • Sulfasalazine (Azulfidine)
