  1. Atom
fundamental building block of all matter. Consists of Protons, Neutrons and Electrons
  2. Molecule
An association of two or more atoms joined by chemical bonds
  3. Compound
Type of molecule that has more than one element
  4. Element
Pure substance that consists only of atoms with the same nmber of protons
  5. Metabolism
all enzyme mediated chemical reactions by which cells acquire and use energy as the build/break down ORGANIC molecules
  6. DNA
Deoxyribonucleic Acid, carries hereditary info about traits
  7. Receptors
Molecule or cellular structure that responds to stimulation
  8. Prokaryotic Cell
single celled organism in which DNA resides in the Cytoplasm. Either Bacterium or Archaen
  9. Eukaryotic Cell
    • Organism whose cells have a nucleus:
    • Protist
    • Plant
    • Fungi
    • Animal
  10. Protist
Eukaryote that is not a plant, fungus or animal
  11. Plant
    Multicelled, typically photosynthetic producer
  12. Fungi
Type of Eukaryote that obtains nutrients by digestion and absorption outise the body
  13. Animal
    Eukaryote, Heterotroph, developes through stages
  14. Heterotroph
Heterotrophs, by consuming reduced carbon compounds, are able to use all the energy that they obtain from food for growth and reproduction, unlike autotrophs, which must use some of their energy for carbon fixation. Heterotrophs are unable to make their own food, however, and whether using organic or inorganic energy sources, they can die from a lack of food. This applies not only to animals and fungi but also to bacteria
  15. Amine
organic compounds which contain and are often actually based on one or more atoms of nitrogen
