  1. What does facultative mean?
    Oxygen is not required, but will enhance growth rate
  2. Where can energy for metabolism come from?
    • Chemoheterotroph (chemoorganotrophs)
    • Photoheterotrophs

  3. How do chemoheterotrophs produce energy (ATP)?
    • Make glucose into ATP through glycolysis, TCA and respiratory chain
    • Without oxygen fermentation and anaerobic respiration
  4. What is anaerobic respiration?
    Use of other terminal electron acceptors besides oxygen. Respiratory chain has specific cytochrome and proteins to allow the use of specific terminal electron acceptors
  5. In anaerobic conditions, what are the most common terminal electron acceptors?
    Nitrogen compounds
  6. What is denitrification?
    The process by which NO, N2O and N2 are lost from the environment as gases
  7. Why is loss of nitrate detrimental to the atmosphere?
    Bad for agriculture, plants use nitrate as a source of nitrogen
  8. Why is denitrification beneficial for sewage treatment?
    Nitrates stimulate algal growth in receiving water
  9. What is Desulfuromonas?
    S0 + 2H+ + 2e- = H2S
  10. What do desulfuromonas use sulfur to do?
    Use as terminal electron acceptor and use acetate, ethanol, and other organic compounds as electron donors
  11. What do disulfovibrio do?
    • Can use sulfate (SO42-) or sulfite (SO32-) as terminal electron acceptor
    • Can use organic compound (lactate) or inorganic compound (H2) as an electron donor
