  1. Trigeminal Nerve. (CN V)

    Functions.

    Pathways
    • Functions:
    • -Sensory: skin, face, eye, nasal cavity, teeth and 2/3 of tongue.
    • -Somatic motor to muscles of mastication.
    • *All 3 divisions are snesory & only V3 has motor functions.

    • Pathway through skull:
    • -V1 through superior orbital fissure (opthalmic branch)
    • -V2 through foramen rotundum (Maxillary branch)
    • -***V3 through foramen ovale. (Mandibular branch): 3 muscles of mastication.

  2. Major Trigeminal Nerve Branches
  3. Facial Nerve (CN VII)

    Functions
    • Functions:
    • -Innervates muscles of facial expression.
    • -Sublingual/sungmandibular glands (2 salivary glands)
    • -Special sensory: taste from 2/3 of tongue.

    • Pathway:
    • -Into internal auditory meatus & out through stylomastoid foramen.
  4. Vestibulocochlea (VIII)
    • Functions:
    • -Balance & hearing
  5. Glossopharyngeal Nerve (CN 9; IX)

    Functions: (3)

    Pathway:
    • Functions:
    • 1) Autonomic motor to parotid glands.
    • 2) General sensory: taste from posterior 1/3 of tongue.
    • 3) Monitor & control gases and pressure

    Pathway: jugular foramen
  6. Vagus (CN 10; X)
    (vagus means "wander")

    Function (2) Somatic motor/Autonomic:

    Pathway
    1) Somatic motor to muscles : pharynx (swallowing) & larynx (speaking).

    2) Autonomoic motor (paryasympathetic) to heart, lungs, GI tract.

    • *Heart & lungs decrease rate/activity
    • *GI tract: increases activity

    Pathway: jugular foramen.
  7. Accessory nerv (CN XI)

    Functions: (1)

    Pathway:
Function: somatic motor to trapezius & stemocleidomastoid muscle.

    Pathway: jugular foramen.
  8. Hypoglossal (CN 12; XII)

    "glossal" means tongue.

    Functions:
Function: somatic motor to muscles of the tongue.

    Pathway: Hypoglossal canal

*Palatoglossus: innervated by Vagus Nerve (swallowing, not tongue movement).
  9. Review openings of skull on slide picture.
