What is Adaptation?
Anything that helps an organism survive in its environment. Also refers to the ability of living things to adjust to different conditions within their environments.
What are the different types of Adaptation?
- 1) Structural
- 2) Protective Coloration
- 3) Mimicry
- 4) Behaviour Adaptations
- 5) Migration
- 6) Hibernation
What is Mimicry
It allows one animal to look, sound, or act like another animal to fool predators into thinking it is poisonous or dangerous
What are Structural Adaptations
- A Structural Adaptation involves some art of an animal's body, such as
- 1) Teeth
- 2) Body Coverings
- 3) Movement
What is Protective Coloration?
Coloration and protective resemblance allow an animal to blend into its environment. Another word for this might be camouflage. Their camouflage makes it hard for enemies to single out individuals
What is behaviour adaptations?
Behaviour adaptations include activities that help an animal survive. Behavious adaptations can be learned or instinctive - Social Behaviour and Behaviour for protection.
What is Migration
This is when behavioral adaptation that involves an animal or group of animals moving from one region to another an then back again.
Why do animals migrate?
- 1) Better Climate
- 2) Better Food
- 3) Safe place to live
- 4) Safe place to raise young
- 5) Go back to the place they were born
What is Hibernation?
This is deep sleep in which animal's body temperature drops, body activities are slowed to conserve energy.
What are some animals that Hibernate?
What are the two adaptation categories?
- 1) Physical; and
- 2) Behavioral
What are Physical Adaptations?
Body structures that allow an animal to find and consume food, defend itself, and to reproduce its species. It helps an animal survive in its environment.
What is Camouflage?
Use of colorin a surrounding. The chameleon can change its color to match its surroundings.
What is Mimicry?
Looking or sounding like another living organism. A Viceroy butterfly uses mimicry to look like the Monarch butterfly.
what are some examples of Physical Adaptation
- 1) Chemical Defenses like venom, ink, sprays
- 2) Body Coverings & Parts like claws, beaks, feet, armor plates, skulls and teeth.
What is behavioral Adaptations?
It allows animals to respond to life needs. Each organism has unique methods of adapting to its environment by means of different actions.
What are the two categories of Behavioral Adaptations?
- 1) Instinctive: These behaviors happen naturally and don't have to be learned.
- 2) Learned: The behaviors must be taught.
What are instinctive behaviors?
- Happen naturally and don't need to be learnied. For example:
- 1) Defending oneself
- 2) Raising young
- 3) Hibernating
- 4) Migrating
- 5) Finding Shelter
What are Learned Behaviors?
Obtained by interacting with the environment and cannot be passed on to the next generation except by teaching.
