    • 1. Passtion and compassion of Jesus:
    • Jesus had passionate priority for the lost, the sick, and the sinner.

    • 2. The process of Jesus:
    • Following Jesus' process takes energetic commitment: Proclamation, demonstation, explanation, invitation, and sacrifice.

    3. The patience of Jesus: he was and is incredibly patient with broken and sinful people. We need such patience for others.

    4. The perseverance of Jesus: it's safer and easier to be the lifeboat for ourselves. The church that is really the church perseveres in seeking the lost.
  6. Recognize the spiritual principles that form the foundation of a growing church. (Sect. 16)
    • 1. The primary need of every person is to reconnect with God.
    • 2. Jesus is God's outstretched hand to humanity to reconnect wth us in a right way.
    • 3. The message of the gospel is the key to people taking hold of God's outstretched hand.
    • 4. The church is the people, place, and plan of God searching for people to hear the message of Jeus and meet the ministry of Jesus.
    • 5. The church's primary mission is to be the appealing flavor of God and the illuminated path of Jesus in a perishing world.
    • 6. The historic failure of the church has always had to do with a confused or abandoned sense of purpose.
    • 7. It is not possible to love God without turning outward to love those with whome we have the opportunity and access.
    • 8. Living to love others is the most redemptive, difficult and risky way to live.
  7. Recognize the cultural principles that inform how we pursue outward growth. (Sect. 17)
    • 1. People are in an extended process of deciding what they believe.
    • 2. If the local church is to be part of that proces, we must earn a place in the discussion and invite people on our journey.
    • 3. We are now entering a post-Christian, post-modern era that demands outreach-oriented churches.
    • 4. The church can either be a pleasant surprise or a painful stumbling block on people's ourney back to God.
    • 5. A sense of belonging precedes believing for most in our culture.
  8. Recognize the sacrificial choices of becoming an outwardly-growing church. (Sect. 19)
    • 1. Choosing to live with limitations
    • 2. Embracing an over-the-top emphasis on evangelism
    • 3. Continualy investing for others
    • 4. Resisting the inward inertia
    • 5. Welcoming growth and change
    • 6. Pursuing excellence
    • 7. Accepting the challenge of the future
