    Alkalinizing Agent
  2. Description
    A salt that provides bicarb to buffer metabolic acidosis which can accompany several disease processes. (DKA or renal failure)
  3. Mechanism of Action
    Combines w/ excessive acids to form a weak volatile acid, increases pH
  4. Onset of Action
    • Onset: Immediate
    • Peak: <15min
    • Duration: 1-2hrs
    • Half-life: N/A
  5. Indications
    • Rarely used Pre-hospital
    • Not recommended in Cardiac Arrest unless caused by DKA or Renal failure
    • Used in TCA overdose
  6. Contraindications
    NONE treat only indications :)
  7. Precautions
    • Cause metabolic alkalosis in large quantities
    • Dont use in same IV line as calcium chloride
  8. Side Effects
    NONE for pre hospital use
  9. Adult Dose
    1mEq/kg followed by 0.5mEq/kg every 10min IV Bolus
  10. Pedi Dose
    Same as Adult

    1mEq/kg followed by 0.5mEq/kg every 10min IV Bolus
  11. Max Dose
    1 pre-hospital dose
  12. Route of Administration
    IV/IO
  13. How Supplied
    50mEq/50ml vials
