The flashcards below were created by user Anonymous on FreezingBlue Flashcards. What would you like to do?

  1. Oxidation is _______ of electrons?
    loss
  2. Reduction is _____ of electrons?
    gain
  3. When both reduction and oxidation take place we call it a ______ reaction?
    redox
  4. Balance this redox equation:
    I2 + 2e- → 2I-
    SO3 2- + H2O → SO4 2- + 2H+ + 2e-
    I2 + SO3 2- + H2O → 2I- SO4 2- + 2H+
  5. What is the concentration of sodium thiosulphate solution if 20cm3 was completely reacted with 19.5 cm3 of 0.1 mol l-1 iodine solution?
    2S2O32- + I2 → S4O6 2- + 2I-
    • moles of I2 = v x c = 0.0195 x 0.1= 0.00195
    • ratio 2S2O32- : I2 = 2 : 1 so the moles of 2S2O32- = 0.00195 x 2 = 0.0039
    • moles = v x c so c = moles / v = 0.0039 / 0.02 = 0.195 mol l-1
