According to C.S. Lewis, what are three things that Jesus said that are teh "most shocking thing that has been uttered by human lips?"
- Talking as if her were God
- Saying he has always existed
- Saying that he is coming to judge the world
Is it possible to prove the Trinity 100%? If not, why not?
No, because the Trinity is not objectively provable apart from the Word of God
What is the heresy known as Tri-theism and what would it be compared to?
- Jesus, the Father, and the Holy Spirit are completely separate from each other.
What is the heresy known as Modalism, and what is the classic illustration used that is an example of it?
- God is one person, yet appears in three forms
- ice/water/water vapor analogy
What is the main problem with Modalism, and what is the Scripture that contradicts it?
- If modalism were true, it would be possible to diagnose our God w/ multiple personalikty disorder
- Mark 1:9-11
Some people believe that the doctrine of the Trinity was created by whom?
The councils of Nicea and Constantinople
Arius of Alexandria (Arianism) believed that the incarnation of Jesus (if he is God) would cause what unacceptable situation?
That God would become mutable (a quality of finiteness), i.e. experience change and thus no longer be infinite or immutable
Who was the key figure refuting Arius and what contribution did he make to the council of Nicea?
- Incarnation: Jesus is the same substance (essence) of the Father
What is the quote by Thomas Aquinas?
"The name 'Trinity' in God signifies the determinate number of persons. And so the plurality of persons in God requires that we should use the word trinity."
What verse connects all three persons of the Trinity?
Mark 28:19 "...baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
What is the primary task in the argument to "prove" the Trinity?
To observe places in the scripture where God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are shown to be divine.
What two types of scriptural evidence establish that Jesus is God?
- When Jesus claimed to be divine
- When Jesus claimed to have divine characteristics
Give three scriptures that affirm the deity of jesus.
- John 8:56-59 "Before Abraham was I am"
- John 20:28 Thomas' confession that Jesus is his Lord and God"
- John 5:18 "calling God his own father, making himself equal to God?
Give three scriptures that affirm the deity of the Holy Spirit
- 2 Cor. 3:17 'now the Lord is the Spirit..."
- Acts 5:3-4 "you have lied to the Holy Spirit... you have not lied to men but to God"
- 1 Cor. 2:10 '...no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God"
How does Lewis use the concept of "life begetting life" (Bios and Zoe) to address the issue of the Trinity?
The Zoe kind of life is the essence or nature of God and is eternal; the Bios kind of life is the life that God's creatures have. These concepts help explain how jesus is both man and God quallly and fully. Jesus is begotten ( precedes from Zoe) and is not created (coming from Bios)
How does Lewis use geometry to explain the Trinity?
You find God is "a being who is 3 Persons whil remaining 1 being, just as a cube is 6 squares while remaining 1 cube."
The argument that God is "outside" of time helps in understanding what aspect of the Trinity?
It answers the problem of how Jesus could be in time asleep and God the Father never sleeping. God is outside of time and space; he doesn't experience the past or the future, only today. Consequently, he does not know the future from our perspective, because there is no future for him. He sees all of our lives as we are doing it in his 'now." Being outside of space and time means that God can be 2 "places" at once.
How does the idea that "God is love" reinforce the concept of the Trinity?
"The words 'God is love' have no real meaning unless God contains at least two persons. Love is something that 1 person has for another. If God was a single person, then before the world was made, He is not love."
What is the transformation that Lewis speaks of regarding the incarnation and us?
Jesus becoming human changed the entire nature of the human race. For us this means, "the business of becoming a son of God, of being turned from a created thing into a begotten thing, of passing over from the temporary biological life into a timeless 'spiritual' life has been done for us."
Why does Lewis say there can only be one Son (2nd person) of the Trinity?
"Because in order to be many [sons] they would have to be different from one another." "The Father's relation to the Son is not the same as the Son's relationship to the Father. But if there were several sons they would all be related to one another and to the Father in the same way. How could they differ from one another?"
How does Lewis' discussion of pretence relate to the desires of the Trinity for additional sons?
God says, "Let us pretend that this is not a mere creature, but our Son. It is like Christ in so far as it is a Man, for He became a Man. Let us pretend that it is also like Him in Spirit. Let us treat it as if it were in fact it is not. Let us pretend in order to make the pretence a reality." "God looks at you as if you were a little Christ: Christ stands beside you to turn you into one."
