    Narcotic Analgesic
  2. Description
    Commonly used CNS depressant and potent anlagesic
  3. Mechanism of Action
    • CNS depressant that acts on opiate receptors in the brain.
    • Decreases SVR and preload, decreasing myocardial O2 demand
  4. Onset of Action
    • Onset: Immediate (15-30min IM)
    • Peak: 20 min (30-60 min IM)
    • Duration: 2-7 hrs
    • Half-life: 1-7 hrs
  5. Indications
    • Severe pain
    • Cardiac chest pain
    • Pulmonary edema (not 1st line)
  6. Contraindications
    • Known Hypersensitivity
    • Hypovolemia
    • Hypotension
    • Head injury
    • undiagnosed abdominal pain
  7. Precautions
    • Highly addictive
    • Respiratory depression
    • Naloxone reverses effects
  8. Side Effects
    • Constricted Pupils
    • Blurred vision
    • Headache
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Abdominal cramps
    • Repiratory depression
    • AMS
  9. Adult Dose
    • 2-10mg IV
    • 5-15mg IM
  10. Pedi Dose
    0.1-0.2mg/kg IV
  11. Max Dose
    10mg
  12. Route of Administration
    IV/IO/IM
