    This was a government odered shut down of all banks in America. Only the strong ones would be allowed to reopen.

    This is the first three months of the preidents rein, everyone pretty much tries to get along with him.
  10. National Recovery Administration (NRA)
    This is the 1st NRA, it is declared later unconstitutional. It was a giant agency that will regulate business and industry. This is voulntary. If you do join it you are required to do certain things and not do certain things.
  11. Public Works Administration (PWA)
    This is a government program to give people jobs building things. Libraries, post-offices, etc. The head of this organization was very good at doing what he did. His concern was quality.
  12. Civilian Conservation Corps (Corps)
    A military organization for young men, 18-25 years old. You joined this and you lived in a military type environment and did conservation work. They payed 30 dollars a month, but 25 of the 30 was sent home. But the CCC provided everything you would need.
  13. Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA)
    This was the 1st AAA (unconstitutional). They try to do for farming, what the NRA did for business. It was voluntary. If you join the AAA you do what they say. They would pay people not to grow things, they would it would help the economy. They thought it would make the price of the things they grew worth more if there was less of it.
  14. Dust Bowl
    This happened in the central plains. There was a severe drought and the ground literally drew up so much that it went up in dust and blew away. People's farms were withering. People started moving to California and they were called 'Okies'. These were the people from the dust bowl, who thought they could make a living in Cal.
  15. John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath
    This was the fictional story of the Dust Bowl.
  16. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)
    A kind of government insurance for banks. It means that a person's individual money that is in the bank will be insured if the bank goes under, up to a certain amount.
  17. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
    This regulates Wall Street, the stock exchange. This was a government regulation of the stock market, in hopes of preventing another stock market crash. Joseph P. Kennedy was the chairman of the SEC. He was a very wealthy man and made his money in bootlegging and the market.
  18. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)
    They took the seed of the Muscles Shoals Project and expanded it. It is a massive regional agency project. It ends up affacting 7 states. FDR said this would be the economic rehabilitation of an entire region.
  19. William Bradfor Huie's mud on the Stars/ "Wild River"
    He wrote a book, a novel, about the coming of TVA to Alabama. H lived in Hartselle. Hollywood turned it into a movie called "Wild River"
  20. Dr. Francis Townsend
    He came up with a plan called The Townsend Plan. It said anyone who is 60+ years old and unemployed, should get 200 dollars a month. But you must spend the money within the month.
  21. Father Charles Coughlin
    He was a radio priest. He wanted more government programs. his show was about politics, rarely was it about religiour matters. He was Anti-Semite, meaning that he didn't like Jews.
  22. Huey Long
    He dominated Louisiana for years. He was the governor then became the Senator. He was pretty much the dictator there. He said "Share our Wealth". He build hospitals, roads, and he built what was for a long time the longest bridge in the world. It was 23 miles long. he wrote the LSU fight song. His plan was to confiscate all fortunes over 5 million dollars. he is now talking bout running for president. He is assassinated and his relatives continue his rein in Louisana.
  23. Works Progress Administration (WPA)
    Replaces the old one. They greatly expand the PWA. This is about quantity not quality. This concerns getting people jobs.
  24. Deficit Spending
    This is spending money we do not have.
  25. Rural Electrification Administration (REA)
    This takes electricity to rural areas, farmers.
  26. Socail Security
    1935, FDR said this was the supreme achievement of the new deal. This provides assistance of old age employment. As an employee you will have so much money taken out of your check and will go into this system. The employer also puts some in this as well. And this is how you get your Social Security checks. The money you get if you make it is usually about 2000 dollars a month.
  27. Wagner Act
    1935, Guaranteees the right of collective bargaining. This is considered pro-labor.
  28. Revenua Act
    1935, This is major increase in the income tax. This expands and it was sold as a soak the rich act. It goes after the rich. It is known as a death tax. This is a tax on an estate when the person dies.

    • The republicans keep saying "me to", they will not offer an alternative to the new, they just do what FDR does except better.
    • labor unions start voting democrat. Black Americans begin to vote deomcrat as well. FDR talked the talk but didn't walk the walk for black Americans.
  30. "court-packing scheme"
    • 1937, The NRA and AAA are declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. FDR would get to appoint a memeber for every member that was 70 years or older. Republicans ovjected to this as well as democrats.
    • This scheme is defeated and never goes through. The people end up retiring or dying and by the end of his presidency he has the people he wanted in it.
  31. Hugo L. Black
    This was FDR's first appointment, it was to the Supreme Court. He was a US Senator from Alabam. He was a strong supporter of the new deal. When Hugo Black was first a member of the Senate, he was a member of the KKK. FDR was embarrassed. They both left Washington, they didn't want to talk to the press. He actually resigned from the KKK before his Senate run, but this was a flawed letter, he wrote his letter of resignation in case he ran for Senate, he could say he wasn't a member.

    Agricultural Adjustment Administration. This tried to fix the first AAA.
  33. Minimum Wage
    When this first came out it was .25 cents an hour. They it was raised to .45 cents an hour.
