  1. Pinkeye, Earache & Sinus Infection
    Conjunctivitis, Otitis Media & Sinusitis

    Sx: red eyes w/pus; inner ear pain & drainage; sinus pain & pressure

    Prevention & Tx: Hand washing, Antibiotics & no preventive measures for sinusitis
  2. Strep Throat
    Streptococcal pharyngitis

    • Sx: red throat, patches of pus, enlarged lymph nodes, no runny eyes, cough or runny nose
    • Complications:
    • *Scarlet fever - strawberry tongue
    • *Peritonsilar abscess - tonsil swelling
    • *sinusitis, otitis media, mastoiditis,
    • pneumonia, meningitis
    • *Acute Glomerulonephritis - blood in
    • urine
    • *Acute Rheumatic fever - fever, joint
    • pain, rash w/nodules under skin
    • Prevention & Tx: ventilation, avoid crowds, penicillin, NO vaccine
  3. Common Cold
    • Sx: Malaise, mild sore throat, runny nose, cough
    • Prevention & Tx: Hand washing, No vaccines, Tx focus on Sx
  4. Adenoviral Pharyngitis
    • Sx: Fever*, runny nose, sore throat, gray pus in throat, cough, conjunctivitis (sometimes)
    • Prev & Tx: No Tx, ppl get better on own
  5. Pneumococcal Pneumonia
    • Sx: cough, fever, chest pain, sputum, runny nose, congestion, SOB
    • Prev & Tx: Vaccine, Penicillin, erythromycin
  6. Mycoplasmal Pneumonia
    • Sx: Fever, headache, muscle pain, fatigue dry cough, ear infection
    • Prev & Tx: No preventive measures, cannot use antibiotics
  7. Klebsiella Pneumonia
    • Sx: High fever, chills, flu-like sx, red jelly-like mucus
    • Prev & Tx: No vaccine, cell-wall targeting drugs
  8. Whooping Cough
    • Pertussis
    • Sx: Runny nose, violent coughing, forceful inhales "whoop", vomiting, seizures
    • Prev & Tx: Vaccines, Erythromycin
  9. Legionnaires' Disease
    • Sx: Headache, muscle aches, rapid temp rise, confusion, shaking chills, dry cough w/some sputum, pleurisy, SOB, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain
    • Prev & Tx: Erythromycin, NO penicillin, enviro detection impractical
  10. Influenza
    Sx: Headache, fever, muscle pain, dry cough, fatigue, generalized weakness

    Prev & Tx: yearly vaccines, meds to inhibit neuraminidase
  11. Swine Flu
    • Sx: fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea
    • Emergency Sx: Kids - fast breathing, blue skin, not interacting; Adults - SOB, dizziness, confusion, severe vomiting
    • Prev & Tx: Antiviral drugs, vaccine, nasal spray
