  1. Staphylococcal Wound Infections
    Sx: Pus production, swelling, redness, pain, fever, Toxic shock syndrome

    Tx: Cleaning, closure of wound by stitches, anti staph meds before surgery. Treating is difficult due to antibiotic resistance
  2. Streptococcal 'Flesh Eaters'
    (Necrotizing Fasciitis)
    Sx: in first 24 hrs - swollen, hot, red; first 48 - purple/blue, leaky fluid blisters & flaying skin

    Tx: Surgery to remove tissue, antibiotics, I.V. Immunoglobulins, hyperbaric O2
  3. Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infections
    Sx: infected area colored GREEN, chills, fever, skin lesions, shock

    Tx: prompt cleaning, removal of dead tissue, resistant to antibiotics - antibiotic sensitivity tests to guide treatment selection
  4. Lumpy Jaw
    Sx: chronic disease, recurring painful swelling in face and neck, pus drainage

    Tx: No prevention measures, long-term antibiotics to treat
  5. Pasturella mulocida Bite Wound Infections
    Sx: Spreading redness, swelling, discharge of pus

    Tx: No vaccines, immediate cleaning, penicillin
  6. Lockjaw
    Sx: uncontrollable cramp-like muscle spasms - start in jaw

    Tx: Immunization for prevention, treat with antitoxin
  7. Gas Gangrene
  8. Cat Scratch Disease
    Sx: pus-filled pimple at site, enlarged lymph nodes, fever, epileptic seizures, coma

    Tx: no prevention measures, clean immed & treat with antiseptic, antibiotics
  9. Streptobacillary Rat Bite Fever
    Sx: chills, fever, muscle aches, headache, vomiting, rash or pain in joints

    Tx: IV Penicillin
  10. Human Bites
    Sx: Rapid onset of pain, massive swelling, foul smelling pus

    Tx: prompt cleaning antiseptic, antibiotics
  11. Rose Gardeners Disease
    Sx: painless ulcerating nodules forming in a line along a lymph vessel

    Tx: Oral KI
