  1. What is digestion?
Digestion is the breaking down of food into smaller pieces
  2. List the two types of digestion that takes place in our body
    Physical Digestion

    Chemical Digestion
  3. What is physical digestion?
This is when food is broken down into smaller pieces by the teeth, tongue and churning action of the muscles in the stomach
  4. What is chemical digestion?
This is when food is broken into smaller pieces by enzymes
  5. What are enzymes?
Enzymes are chemicals that speed up chemical changes in the body without itself being changed

    They break down food
  6. Give an example of an enzyme in our digestive system
    Salivary Amalyse
  7. State the substrate that amylase works on
    Starch
  8. What product is formed by the action of amylase?
    Sugar (Maltose)
  9. Where does saliva come from?
    Salivary Glands
  10. Image Upload 1
Correctly identify the part labelled A
    Mouth
  11. What is the function of the mouth?
To chew food and mix it with saliva
  12. Image Upload 2
Correctly identify the part labelled B
    Oesophagus (Food Pipe)
  13. What is the function of the oesophagus?
To carry food from the mouth to the stomach
  14. Image Upload 3
Correctly identify the part labelled C
    Liver
  15. What is the function of the liver?
To make bile which helps to break down fat
  16. Correctly identify the part labelled DImage Upload 4
    Stomach
  17. What is the function of the stomach?
To store food and mix it with digestive juices
  18. State the enzyme in the stomach that digests food
    Hydrochloric acid
  19. Correctly identify the part labelled EImage Upload 5
    Pancreas
  20. What is the function of the pancreas?
To produce enzymes that pass into the small intestine and help to digest food
  21. Correctly identify the part labelled FImage Upload 6
    Large intestine
  22. What is the function of the large intestine?
To pass water back into the blood and removes solid waste from the body
  23. Correctly identify the part labelled GImage Upload 7
    Small intestine
  24. What is the function of the small intestine?
To put the broken down food into our blood
  25. What is peristalsis?
This is the muscular movement of food through the digestive system
  26. State the function of incisors
To bite and cut the food
  27. State the function of premolars
To crush and grind the food
  28. State the function of canines
    To tear the food
  29. State the function of molars
To crush and grind the food
  30. List different ways a person can look after their teeth
    Eat less sugary food

Brush our teeth twive a day

    Visit the dentist
  31. What is ingestion?
This is when food is taken into the mouth
  32. What is digestion?
This is the breaking down of food into smaller pieces

    It happens in the stomach
  33. What is absorption?
This is putting the digested food into the blood
  34. Where does absorption take place in the body?
    The small intestine
  35. Why does absorption take place in the small intestine?
    1. It is approximately 6 metres long so this gives a large surface area for digestion and absorption

    2. There are millions of villi which gives a huge surface area to help absorption of nutrients

    3. The villi have thin walls and a rich blood supply which allows nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream
  36. What is egestion?
This is the removing of undigested food from the body
  37. List the five stages in nutrition
    • Ingestion
    • Digestion
    • Absorption
    • Assimilation
    • Egestion
