  1. What is digestion?
Digestion is the breaking down of food into smaller pieces
  2. List the two types of digestion that takes place in our body
    Physical Digestion

    Chemical Digestion
  3. What is physical digestion?
This is when food is broken down into smaller pieces by the teeth, tongue and churning action of the muscles in the stomach
  4. What is chemical digestion?
This is when food is broken into smaller pieces by enzymes
  5. What are enzymes?
Enzymes are chemicals that speed up chemical changes in the body without itself being changed

    They break down food
  6. Give an example of an enzyme in our digestive system
    Salivary Amalyse
  7. State the substrate that amylase works on
    Starch
  8. What product is formed by the action of amylase?
    Sugar (Maltose)
  9. Where does saliva come from?
    Salivary Glands
  10. What is the function of saliva?
    To soften the food

It is an enzyme that breaks down starch to sugar (maltose) in the mouth

  11. Correctly identify the part labelled A
    Mouth
  12. What is the function of the mouth?
To chew food and mix it with saliva

  13. Correctly identify the part labelled B
    Oesophagus (Food Pipe)
  14. What is the function of the oesophagus?
To carry food from the mouth to the stomach

  15. Correctly identify the part labelled C
    Liver
  16. What is the function of the liver?
To make bile which helps to break down fat
  17. What is the function of the gallbladder?
To store bile when it is made by the liver

To send the bile to the small intestine when it is needed to digest fat
  18. Correctly identify the part labelled D
    Stomach
  19. What is the function of the stomach?
To store food and mix it with digestive juices
  20. State the enzyme in the stomach that digests food
    Hydrochloric acid
  21. Correctly identify the part labelled E
    Pancreas
  22. What is the function of the pancreas?
To produce enzymes that pass into the small intestine and help to digest food
  23. Correctly identify the part labelled F
    Large intestine
  24. What is the function of the large intestine?
To pass water back into the blood and removes solid waste from the body
  25. Correctly identify the part labelled G
    Small intestine
  26. What is the function of the small intestine?
To put the broken down food into our blood
  27. What is peristalsis?
This is the muscular movement of food through the digestive system
  28. How many teeth does an adult have?
    32
  29. State the function of incisors
To bite and cut the food
  30. State the function of premolars
To crush and grind the food
  31. State the function of canines
    To tear the food
  32. State the function of molars
To crush and grind the food
  33. List different ways a person can look after their teeth
    Eat less sugary food

Brush our teeth twive a day

    Visit the dentist
  34. What is ingestion?
This is when food is taken into the mouth
  35. What is digestion?
This is the breaking down of food into smaller pieces

    It happens in the stomach
  36. What is absorption?
This is putting the digested food into the blood
  37. Where does absorption take place in the body?
    The small intestine
  38. Why does absorption take place in the small intestine?
    1. It is approximately 6 metres long so this gives a large surface area for digestion and absorption

    2. There are millions of villi which gives a huge surface area to help absorption of nutrients

    3. The villi have thin walls and a rich blood supply which allows nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream
  39. What is assimilation?
This is when the food is used by the body for energy, growth and repair
  40. What is egestion?
This is the removing of undigested food from the body
  41. List the five stages in nutrition
    • Ingestion
    • Digestion
    • Absorption
    • Assimilation
    • Egestion
