1. What is matter?
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass
2. List the three types of matter
Solids

Liquids

Gases
3. Describe the Particle Theory of Matter
Matter is made up of tiny particles

The particles of matter are always moving

The particles of matter can be held together by very strong forces

There are empty spaces between the particles of matter

The particles that one substances is made of are different to the particles of other substances

Heat energy affects how much the particles move.  The more heat the more the particles move
4. State a property of solids
Have a fixed mass

Have a fixed shape

Have a fixed volume

Cannot be easily compressed

Particles cannot flow
5. State a property of liquids
Have a fixed mass

Have no fixed shape

Have a fixed volume

Cannot be easily compressed

Particles can flow
6. What is viscosity?
This is used to describe the flow rate of a liquid
7. State a property of gases
Has a fixed mass

Has no fixed volume

Has no fixed shape

Particles can flow

It can be easily compressed
8. What is compression?
This happens when particles are forced closer together to make them fit into a smaller space
9. What is diffusion?
This is the spreading out of particles to fill the space they are in

It is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
10. What is melting?
This is when a solid changes into a liquid
11. What is meant by the melting point?
This is the temperature a substance melts at
12. State the melting point of ice
00C
13. Explain evaporation
This is changing a liquid into a gas
14. What is meant by the boiling point?
This is the temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas
15. State the boiling point of water
1000C
16. Explain condensation
This is changing a gas into a liquid
17. Explain freezing
This is changing a liquid into a solid
18. State the freezing point of water
00C
19. Explain sublimation
This is when a substance is heated and they do not melt but turn straight into a gas

They do not form a liquid
20. What is a property?
This is a feature and behaviour of a material
21. What is a physical property?
This is something you can observe without changing the substance eg. colour, smell and texture
22. What is a chemical property?
This is the way that a material reacts with other materials and new substances are made eg. rusting
23. What is meant by absorbent?
This means that the material is able to soak up liquid easily
24. What is meant by elastic?
This means that the material can stretch and then return to shape
25. What is meant by flexible?
This means that the material can bend without breaking
26. What is meant by transparent?
This means that you can see through the material
27. What is meant by strong?
This means that the material cannot be broken easily
28. What is meant by the carbon footprint?
This is the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by an organisation, event, product or individual
29. What is meant by an emission?
This is any substance that is released into the air (atmosphere)
30. What is meant by recycling?
This means taking an unwanted object and reusing the materials it is made of

Paper, glass, metal and plastic can all be recycled
31. What is a physical change?
This is when matter changes shape or state but no new substance is formed eg. melting and boiling

It is easy to reverse (change back)

There is no change in mass
32. What is a chemical change?
This is when a new substance is formed eg. rusting

It is not easy to reverse (change back)

There is no change in mass
33. State the Law of Conservation of Mass
The Law of Conservation of Mass states that matter cannot be created or destroyed but can change from one form to another
