Explain what is meant by the term atom
This is the smallest part of an element that can exist and can only be seen with a microscope
What is an element?
This is a substance made up of only one type of atom eg. gold is an element as it is made up of only gold atoms
Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances
What is a molecule?
This is formed when two or more atoms join together chemically eg. oxygen gas (O2)
What is a compound?
This is when a molecule is made up of two or more different types of atoms eg. carbon dioxide (CO2)
What is an atom made up of?
Where are protons found in an atom?
Where are neutrons found in an atom?
Where are electrons found in an atom?
Orbits the nucleus
What is the electric charge of a proton?
What is the electric charge of a neutron?
What is the electric charge of an electron?
What is meant by atomic number?
This is the number of protons in the nucleus of that atom
What is meant by mass number?
This is the total number of protons and neutrons in that atom
State the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in Lithium
Lithium has 3 protons
Lithium has 3 electrons
Lithium has 4 neutrons (7 - 3)
