  1. What is the Periodic Table?
This is a list of the elements arranged in order of increasing atomic number
  2. Where are metals found on the Periodic Table?
    On th left hand side
  3. Where are non metals found on the Periodic Table?
    On the right hand side
  4. What are groups in the periodic table?
These are the vertical columns in the periodic table
  5. How many groups are in the periodic table?
    8 groups
  6. State the name for Group 1 on the Periodic Table
    The Alkali Metals
  7. Describe Group 1 elements on the Periodic Table
The Alkali metals have one electron in their outer shell

    They are very reactive

Elements in this group are Lithium (Li), Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K)
  8. Describe what happens when an alkali metal reacts with water
When an alkali metal eg. lithium is added to water it floats on the surface of the water

    Hydrogen gas is released

This is an alkaline solution as it will turn red litmus paper blue and has a pH greater than 7

The equation for this reaction is: Lithium + Water = Lithium Hydroxide + Water
  9. Describe what happens when an alkali metal reacts with oxygen in the air
When an alkali metal reacts with oxygen in the air it becomes dull and forms a metal oxide

This is an alkaline solution as it turns red litmus paper blue and has a pH greater than 7

The equation for this reaction is: Lithium + Oxygen = Lithium Oxide
  10. State the name for Group 2 on the Periodic Table
    The Alkaline Earth Metals
  11. Describe Group 2 elements on the Periodic Table
The Alkaline Earth Metals have two electrons in their outer shell

Examples of elements are Beryllium (Be), Magnesium (Mg) and Calcium (Ca)
  12. State the name for Group 7 on the Periodic Table
    The Halogens
  13. Describe Group 7 elements on the Periodic Table
The Halogens have seven electrons in their outer shell

Elements in this group are Fluorine (Fe) and Chlorine (Cl)
  14. State the name for Group 8 on the Periodic Table
    The Noble Gases
  15. Describe Group 8 elements on The Periodic Table
The Noble Gases have eight electrons in their outer shell

It is the most unreactive and very stable because it has a full outer shell

Gases in this group are Helium (He), Neon (Ne) and Argon (Ar)
  16. What are periods in the periodic table?
These are the horizontal rows of elements in the periodic table
