  1. Alveolar sac
Tiny, thin walled, capillary rich sac in the lungs where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place
  2. Bronchi
One of several large air passages in the lungs through which pass inhaled air and exhaled air.
  3. Bronchiole
Thin air passage in the lung that branches off a larger airway
  4. Diaphragm
Sheet of skeletal muscle that extends across the lower pair of ribs, separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity and is used to control breathing
  5. Larynx
Portion of the respiratory tract having walls of cartilage and muscle and containing the vocal cords enveloped in folds of mucous membrane
  6. Lung
Either of two respiratory organs occupying the thoracic cavity that function to bring O2 from the external environment into contact with hemoglobin
  7. Nare
    External opening of respiratory tract
  8. Nasal cavity
Area between the cranium and the roof of the mouth that serves as a passageway for the respiratory tract and is responsible for conditioning of air before entering the lungs
  9. Nose
Specialized facial structure serving as an organ of the sense of smell and as a passageway for the respiratory apparatus.
  10. Nostril
    External opening of respiratory tract
  11. Olfactory epithelium
Specialized cells in nasal cavity that contain specialized neurons involved in odor detection
  12. Pharynx
Passage that leads from the cavities of the nose and mouth to the larynx (voice box) and esophagus.
  13. Phonation
Modification by the vocal folds of the airstream as it leaves the lungs and passes through the larynx that results in production of sound
  14. Pleural fluid
Fluid located between parietal and visceral pleura
  15. Pleural membrane
Thin serous membrane in mammals that envelops each lung and folds back to make a lining for the thoracic cavity
  16. Pulmonary surfactant
Surface active lipoprotein that is important in reducing surface tension adding in the expansion of the tissue
  17. Respiration
System that functions to provide O2 and remove CO2 from cells
  18. Thoracic cavity
Body cavity between the neck and the diaphragm, that is incased by vertebra, sternum, & ribs containing the lungs and heart
  19. Tracheea
Tube that connects from the larynx to the bronchial tubes; contains rings of cartilage to prevent its collapse
  20. Voice box
Portion of the respiratory tract having walls of cartilage and muscle and containing the vocal cords enveloped in folds of mucous membrane
