    Sympathetic agonist
  2. Description
    Synthetic catecholamine that acts on Beta adrenergic receptors
  3. Mechanism of Action
    • Potent Beta agonist with no alpha stimulation
    • Acts selectively on heart and lungs
  4. Onset of Action
    • Onset: immediate
    • Peak: <1 min
    • Duration: varies
    • Half-life: <1.5 min
  5. Indications
    • Denervated hearts that need more cardiac output
    • Beta blocker overdose
    • Mobitz II & 3rd degree heart blocks (when pacing unavailable)
    • Shock resulting from bradycardia
  6. Contraindications
    To increase BP in cardiogenic shock
  7. Precautions
    • Monitor vitals for ventricular irritability
    • Increased myocardial O2 demand can increase MI size
    • May cause myocardial ischemia
    • Use pacing if available
    • Administer through pump
    • Deactivated by alkaline solutions
  8. Side Effects
    • Angina
    • Dysrhythmia
    • HTN
    • Nervous
    • Tremor
    • Headache
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
  9. Adult Dose
    • 2-10mcg/min
    • 1mg in 500ml D5W = 2mcg/ml
  10. Pedi Dose
    0.1mcg/kg/min
  11. Max Dose
    Titrate to effect
  12. Route of Administration
    IV Only
