What effect will a Muscarinic agonist have on the pupils?
M agonist will cause miosis and accomodation.
- M receptors:
- Sphincter muscle -> miosis
- Accomodation -> contraction (relax = no M activation)
What causes mydriasis and cycloplegia?
Remember that accomodation is dependent only on muscarinic receptors.
A patient presents to the ER because of tachycardia, mydriatic pupils, but cannot sweat. What is going on?
This patient is on atropine a muscarinic antagonist.
Sweating although sympathetic is controlled by acetycholine which can be inhibited by muscarinic antagonist leaving the sympathetic system intact.
