    • Diverticula: Sacular dilations or outpouchings of the of the intestinal mucosa (most common in sigmoid)
    • Diverticulosis: Multiple non-inflammed diverticula
    • Diverticulitis: Inflammation of diverticula resulting in perforation into the peritoneum
    • Complications: Perforation, Abscess, Fistula, Bleeding, Obstruction

    • Incidence: <5% by age 40 65% by age 85
    • Causes: inadequate dietary fiber

    • --High Fiber (30g), low fat, low red meat diet
    • --Increase fluid intake 
    • --Exercise/Weight Reduction
    • --Avoid activities that increase intraabdominal pressure
    • Acute management of Diverticulitis
    • Home: oral antibiotics and clear liquid diet
    • Hospital:
    • NPO
    • Bed Rest
    • IV fluids
    • IV Antibiotics (Levaquin, Flagyl)
    • Surgery (complications)
