  1. Molarity 
    Concentration relative to the solute's molecular weight and total solution volume 
  2. Osmoles 
    Number of solute particles 

    e.g. 2.5 mmol CaCl2 = 3particles x 2.5 = 7.5 mosm CaCl2
  3. Osmolarity 
    Solute particles/1L (temperature dependent) 
  4. Equivalents 
    • Used to refer to fluid and electrolyte homeostasis 
    • Relative to valance of ions 

    • 2.5 mM CaCl2 where Ca2+ and Cl- = 
    • 5mEq of Ca (2.5 x 2+) 
    • and

  5. Isotonic 
    Normal osmolarity

    Osmolarity same within and surrounding the compartment
  6. Hypotonic 
    • Compartment has a lower concentration of solutes than its surroundings
    • Water/solvent will flow out of compartment 
    • Cells will shrink 
  7. Hypertonic 
    • Cell has a greater solute conentration than what it's surrounded by 
    • Water will rush into the cell to balance osmolarity 
    • Cells will swell
