  1. Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)
    A federal law that bars discrimination against people with disabilities.  The scope of the act includes both employment and access to places of public accommodation.
  2. Civil Rights
    Personal rights that derive primarily from the Constitution, for example, equal protection, free speech, freedom of contract, privace, and due process.
  3. Civil Rights Laws
    Statutes that prohibit discrimination.
  4. Civil Rights Act of 1964
    A federal statute that prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, or natural origin.
  5. Discrimination
    The act of treating some people different from and less favorably than others.
  6. Injunction
    A court order forbidding a party to lawsuit from engaging in specified acts.
  7. Interstate Commerce
    Business affecting more than one state, as opposed to business done between two parties in the same state.
  8. Landmark Decision
    A court decision that sets a precedent marking a turning point in the interpretation of law.
  9. National Origin
    The country where people were born or from which their ancestors came.
  10. Place of Public Accomodation
    A variety of business establishments open to the public.
  11. Readily Achievable
    Easily accomplishable without great difficulty or expense.
  12. Transients
    A person passing through a place for only a brief stay or sojourn.
  13. Unitary Rule
    The rule enforcing the Civil Rights Act when a covered facility is located with a noncovered business; both the covered and the noncovered businesses are subject to the Act.
