  1. Superior
    Toward the head, top, or above
  2. Inferior
    away from head, bottom, or below.
  3. Medial
    toward the midline.
  4. Lateral
    away from the midline.
  5. Proximal
    closer to the point of origin or attachment.
  6. Distal
    further away from the point of origin or attchment.
  7. Anterior (Ventral)
    toward the front.
  8. Posterior (dorsal)
    toward the back.
  9. Ipsilateral
    same side of midline.
  10. Contralateral
    opposite side of midline.
  11. Superficial
    means toward the surface.
  12. Deep
    towards the core.   *most organs inside cavities are covered with a double-layered membrane.
  13. Parietal

  15. Sagittal
    dividing medial from lateral.

    Midsagittal- divides the body into two equal, mirror-image halves.

    Parasagittal- Parallel to sagittal, but not through the midline.
  16. Transverse (horizontal)
    dividing superior from inferior.
  17. Frontal (coronal)
    dividing anterior from posterior.  (dorsal from ventral)
