What are main cells attacked when dog has adenovirus type 1?
hepatocytes, epithelial cells (like those in kidney and eye)
What is adenovirus type 1?
Adenovirus 1 (infectious hepatitis) is rare in the US due to vaccination. what vaccine is used? Why?
adenovirus type 2 because it also provides cross protection for type 1 and type 1 vx causes virus shedding in urine and blue eye
How is adenovirus 1 spread and acquired?
- shed in all secretions during acute infection; shed in urine after 6-9 months
- oronasal exposure --> disseminates to all tissues
What 3 systems are mostly effected by distemper virus?
GI, Resp, Neuro
Is adenovirus resistent in the environment? What about distemper? How contagious are these viruses?
- distemper- easily destroyed
- both very contagious, esp. if unvaccinated
What are general clinical signs for distemper?
variable but respiratory often first and coicide with 2nd part of diphasic fever
Where is hyperkeratosis noted with distemper? What other peculiar sign may be seen?
- foot pads and nose
- hypoplasia of enamel
What are 2 characteristic signs seen when distemper invades CNS?
chewing gum seizures and myoclonus
What age is most prone to distemper?
2-6 months w/inadequate vaccination and hi risk place like shelter
What is only definitive diagnosis for distemper?
inclusion bodies seen in circulating lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, and RBCs
How does serology aid in diagnosing distemper?
rising serum neutralizing Ab or specific IgM titer is suggestive of recent infection (IgG is of NO benefit--will show up w/vacc.)
What is treatment for distemper?
supportive only, disease is progressive and mortality is hi in puppies (consider euthanasia)
What 3 viruses comprise kennel cough complex?
- bordetella bronchiseptica
- canine parainfluenza virus
- canine adenovirus type 2
What should you tell clients about treating and preventing kennel cough?
- intranasal/injectable vx are available (may just reduce symptoms)
- usu.self limiting cough but very contagious/acute onset
