  1. Cascading Leadership
    Refers to the process of young people passing their leadership skills on younger or new members of the group. 
  2. Challenging/ Challenging learning experiences 
    Requires experiences participants to streach beyond their current range of knowlege and skills and offer opportunities to test and master their skills in the real world
  3. Deficits
    Refer to young people participitations in problem behavior. Risk factors in their life that suggests that they will participate in the behavior.
  4. Deficit Approach/ Deficit based programming
    The deficit approach sets fixing young people problem behavior as a goal of youth programming. The goal of this approach is to decrease or stop a specific behavior. 
  5. Developmental youth outcomes/ Developmental outcomes
    are the intermediate milestones that measure yong people's progress toward successful early adult hood. This is also can be describe as the fundamental skills that young people need to become sucessful adults. 
  6. Early adult outcomes
    What we want young people to be able to do at a minimum, as they enter adulthood, that would indicate healthy development. The summary we use in this guide are: social relationships, healthy family, and contributing to the community.
  7. Engaging/ engaging learning experiences
    Learning experiences are engaging when they tap into a young person's natural curiosity and interest in discovery, at the same time motivating, rather than discouraging their eagerness to try new activities.
  8. Fading facilitation
    The process of an adult leader's presence receding into the background as young people gain the experience and skills to take on more responsibility and more meaningful roles.
  9. Indicators
    Indicators in a youth development context are sings that can be seen and measured showing that a program is effectively implementing a specific practice. 
  10. Learingin experiences/ Challenging and engaging learing experiences
    Are experiences are those experiences that allow young to expand their understaing and knowledge of themselves and their enviroment and master specific new concepts and skills. 
  11. Organizational Practices
    The polices, structures and actions of an after school program's larger, sponsoring organizations, such as schools, schools districts, or agencies. Some example of good organization practices are low teacher to student ratio, safe enviroment.

    Program outcomes refer to the specific goals or objectives set by a particular after school program.

    Relationship building is the development of caring, supportive relationship betweeen caring adults and young people, and amoung their peers. These experiences are vital to develping people healthy development and learning.
  15. Resiliency/ Resilency Reserch 
    The ability of young people to bounce back from negative experiences. The research shift the focus from young people deficits to the enviromental factors that help young people succeed. 
  16. Risk factors
    Refers to the deficits in young people enviroments which researchers believe put them "at risk" for engaging in problem behavor and having defficluty achieving positive outcome as young adults
  17. Safety
    Refers to the experience of physical and emotional safety that young people need in order to learn important life skills they will need in adulthood.
