  1. Noun
    A person, place, thing, or idea.

    There are proper nouns, that are capitalized and name something or someone specific (ex.: Mrs. Cowles, Rochester).

    There are common nouns like:  dog, pen, house, computer.
  2. Verb
    Express action or a state of being.

    Action words like:  run, jump, sit.

    State of being like:  am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been.
  3. Adverb
    Modifys a verb, adverb, adjective, clause, or phrase.  An adverb indicates manner, time, place, cause, or degree and answers questions such as "how," "when," "where," "how much".  Adverbs often but not always end in "ly".  Here are some examples of adverbs:  quickly, silently, well, badly, very, really.
  4. Adjective
    Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence. The Articles — a, an, and the — are adjectives.

    • the tall professor
    • a solid commitment
    • a month's pay
    • a six-year-old child
    • the unhappiest, richest man
  5. Interjection
    A word or sound that expresses or vents a strong feeling (ex.:  Wow!  Ouch!).
  6. Preposition
    A word that creates a relationship between other words and often deal with space and time. 

    • Here are some examples of prepositions:  Aboard, about, above, across
    • Against, along, around
    • Amid, among, after, at
    • Except, for, during, down
    •  
    • Behind, below, beneath, beside
    • Between, before, beyond
    • By, in, from, off, on, over, of
    • Until, unto, upon
    •  
    • Under, underneath, since, up
    • Like, near, past, throughout, through
    • With, within, without, instead
    • Toward, inside, into, to
  7. Pronoun
    Replaces a noun.  Here are some examples of pronouns:  I, they, she, he, her, his, you, some.
  8. Conjunction
    Joins clauses, sentences, or words.  Some examples of conjunctions are:  and, but, when.
