    *hormone- thyroid preperation
    *restores normal hormonal balance
    *increases metabolic rate of body tissue
    *stims protein synthesis
    • side effects:
    • hyperthroidism, insomnia, ab cramps, tachycardia, sweating, irregular menstration, weight loss

    • implications:
    • *assess BP and apical
    • *monitor thyroid function studies

    *anti-Alzheimer's drug
    *cholinesterase inhibitor
    *enhanced cholinergic function to decrease dementia  
    • side effects:
    • weakness, anorexia, nausea, vomitting, diarrhea, headache, edema, tremor

    • implications:
    • *assess cognitive function throughout therapy
    • *monitor for nausea, vomitting, anorexia or weight loss
    • *may be worn during bathing/hot weather

    *prevents binding of excititory neirotransmitter glutamate
    *cognitive enhancement
    • side effects:
    • dizziness, fatigue, headache, sedation, hypertension, diarrhea, weight gain, anemia

    • implications:
    • *assess cognitive abilities periodically
    • *monitor for anemia
  4. Aggrenox         25-200mg       1 cap PO
    • combo drug
    • *asprin  25 mg
    • *extended release dipyridamole  200 mg
  5. asprin        25 mg
    *non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID)
    *antipyretic
    *non opiod analgesic
    *inhibits prostoglandin synthesis re: pain/inflammation
    *causes vasodilation
    *anticoagulant (decreased platlet aggregation)

    side effects: gastric discomfort/bleeding, anemia, increased bleeding time, allergic reaction

    implications:
    *prolonged bleeding and prothrombin time
    *monitor hematocrit to assess for GI blood loss
    *increased risk for gastric ulcers
    • dipyridamole     200 mg
    • *antiplatelet agent
    • *coronary vasodilator

    • side effects:
    • dizziness, headache, syncope, nausea, GI upset

    *Beer's List- monitor for orthostatic hypotension in geriatric clients
  6. acetaminophen      325 mg       2 tabs PO
    *antipyretic

    *non opiod analgesic (mild to moderate pain)
    *inhibits prostaglandin synthesis
    • side effects:
    • hepatotoxicity, constipation, renal failure in high doses

    • implications:
    • *assess for malnourishment/alcohol use before beginning treatment (increases risk of hepatotoxicity)
    • *monitor hepatic, hematologic and renal function periodically
