  1. Orbicularis Oris
    • Major muscle that makes up the lips
    • Cirle the lips like an oval from one corner to another
    • Upon the contraction, the lips constrict
  2. Buccinator
    • Origin: Pterygomandibular ligament
    • Insertion: Orbicularis oris at the corner of mouth
    • Action: Sucks in cheeks and lifts the corner of mouth
  3. Risorius
    • Origin: fascia of the masseter muscle
    • Insertion: Orbicularis Oris at the corner of the mouth
    • Action: Retract the lips at the corners
  4. Levator Labii Superior
    • has three heads:
    • 1. Angular head
    • 2. Infraorbital head
    • 3. Zygomatic head
    • Insertion: into the upper lip (orbicularis oris), slightly medial to the corner
    • Action: Upon contraction the upper lip lifts, as in smiling
  5. The Angular head of the Levator Labii Superior
    • Origin: On the frontal process of the maxilla
    • Insertion: Upper lip (orbicularis oris), slightly medial to the corner
    • Action: Upon contraction, the upper lip lifts, as in smiling
  6. The Infraorbital head of the Levator Labii Superior
    • Origin: Right under eye socket
    • Insertion: Upper lip (orbicularis oris), slightly medial to the corner
    • Action: Upon contraction, the upper lip lifts as in smiling
  7. The Zygomatic head of the Levator Labii Superior
    • Origin: slightly more lateral on the surface of the zygomatic bone
    • Insertion: Upper lip (Orbicularis Oris) slightly medial to the corner
    • Action: Upon contraction, upper lip lifts as in smiling
  8. Zygomatic muscle
    • Origin: more lateral than the zygomatic head of the levator labii superior
    • Insertion: Orbicularis Oris at the corner of the moth
    • Action: smile
  9. Levator Anguli Oris
    • Origin: Area of the maxilla that houses canine (eye) teeth (canine fossa)
    • Insertion: corner of the orbicularis oris
    • Action: moves corner of the lips up and medial
  10. Depressor labii inferior
    • Origin: Oblique line of the mandible
    • Insertion: Orbicularis oris at the corner
    • Action: Pulls lower lip down and slightly lateral
  11. Depressor anguli oris
    • Origin: oblique line of the mandible
    • Insertion: Orbicularis oris at the corner of the mouth
    • Action: Pulls the corners down
  12. Incisivis Labii Superior 
    • Origin: maxilla near midline
    • Insertion: Corner of the mouth
    • Action: draws the corners medially and down
  13. Incisivis Labii Inferior
    • Origin: mandible near midline
    • Insertion: corner of the mouth
    • Action: draws corners medially and down
  14. Mentalis
    • Origin: mandible where the incisors are housed (incisve fossa)
    • Insertion: the skin of the chin
    • Action: lower lip is pulled down and/or elevated as in pouting. elevates the chin
  15. Platysma
    • Origin: fascia of pectoralis major
    • Insertion: corner of the mouth
    • Action: lower the mandible and lower the lip
