  1. What is Bootstrap? and where is it stored?
    • It is used to bring a router up during initialization. It will boot the router and then load the IOS.
    • It is stored in the ROM.
  2. What is the POST? and where is it stored?
    • It is used to check the basic functionality of the router hardware and determine which interfaces are present. 
    • It is stored in the ROM.
  3. What is the ROM monitor? where is it stored?
    • It is used for manufacturing, testing, and troubleshooting.
    • It is stored in the ROM.
  4. What is the Mini-IOS? where is it stored?
    • Called the RXBOOT or bootloader by Cisco, the mini-IOS is a small IOS in ROM that can be used to bring up an interface and load a Cisco IOS into flash memory.
    • It is stored in the ROM.
  5. What is RAM?
    (Random Access Memory) Stores packet buffers, ARP cash, routing tables, and cisco can expand the IOS into RAM appon boot.
  6. What is ROM?
    (read-only memory) used to start and maintain the router. Holds the POST and the bootstrap programs as well as the mini-IOS.
  7. What is in the flash memory?
    The flash memory holds the IOS. It is EEPROM and does not erase when the router is rebooted.
  8. What is NVRAM? and what does it do?
    • (nonvolatile RAM) It is used to hold the router and switch configuration. NVRAM is not erased when the router or switch is reloaded.
    • It also stores the Configuration register.
  9.  What is the Configuration register?
    It is used to controle how the rotuer boots up. This value can be found as the last line of the show version command output and by default is set to 0x2102.
  10. What does the configuration register 0x2102 do?
    • It tells the router to use the boot commands specified in NVRAM.
    • This is also the default setting.
  11. What should you set the configuration register to for password recovery?
    0x2142. The "4" tells the router to ignore the NVRAM appon boot.
