  1. Allotrope
Multiple forms of the same element that have different bonding/sturcture
  2. Alkane
Contains only single bonds (most basic type of hydro carbon)
  3. Alkene
Contans at least one double bond
  4. Alkyne
Contains at least one triple bond
  5. Isomer
Compuond witht the same number and type of atoms but have different arrangements
  6. Functional Group
Atom or group of atoms attatched to a hydrocarbon that always react in a certain way
  7. Polymer
Large, organic molecule made of smaller units that are bonded together
  8. Monomer
Smaller unit that links to make polymers
  9. Suspension
Heterogeneous mixture in which particles settle out (flour and water) ( large particles)
  10. Colloid
Heterogeneous mixture in which particles do not settle out. (mayonaise) (intermediate sized particles) (Brownian motion)
  11. Solvent
Primary ingredient in a solution (does the dissolving) (ex: water)
  12. Solute
Ingredient that is added to the solvent (what is dissolved) (ex: salt)
  13. Aqueous
Solultion where water is the solvent
  14. Molarity
    • a quantitive description of solution concentration (M)
    •
  15. Molality
      (m)
  16. Miscible
Able to be mixed to form a solution (soluble)
  17. Electrolyte
Substance which forms ions in an aqueous solution
  18. Colligative Property
A physical property that only depends on the number of solute particles
  19. Chemical Kinetics
    Rates of chemical reactions
  20. Reaction Rate
The rate at which the ractants of a chemical reaction form products
  21. Average Rate
Change in molar concentration of reactants or products in unit time
  22. Rate Law
    • Equation that links reaction rate with concentractions
  23. Rate Order
    • Order of a reaction with respect to a given substance
    • (usually 0, 1, 2, or 3)
  24. Mechanism
Set of steps that describes how reactants are changed into products
  25. Rate-Determining Step
Slowest step of a mechanism that determines the rate of reaction
  26. Activation Energy
Smallest amount of energy needed for a reaction to occur
  27. Activated Complex
Temporary molecule created after atoms initially collide, but before they turn into products (highest point on graph)
  28. Catalyst
Something added to a chemical reaction that increases the rate, but does not change in the reaction
