  1. Gloria: by the stove. I'll show you.
    Susy: Who is it?
    It's Sergeant Carlino.
  2. Susy: ...And I'm so glad you came because some kids were playing out at the back and I think they've broken a window in the bathroom. Would you mind taking a look?
I've got more important things to do, Mrs. Hendrix.
  3. Susy: It would only take you a momen... if you would, please.
There's nothing wrong with the bathroom window.
  4. Susy: How about this window then?
    It's okay.
  5. Susy: ...Well, thanks for looking anyway. Was there something you wanted to ask me?
I understand that a Mr. Roat called on you just now.
  6. Me: I understand that a Mr. Roat called on you just now.
    Susy: Yes he did.
I thought you should know taht the woman who was murdered outside here last night was his wife.
  7. Me: I thought you should know taht the woman who was murdered outside here last night was his wife.
    Susy: Oh.
[Accusingly] You don't seem very suprirsed to hear that.
  8. Susy: Well, from teh way her husband behaved on the phone I guessed something had happened.
You seem to have been searching for something since I was here last, Mrs. Hendrix.
  9. Susy: Yes - I was trying to find some bags for the vacuum cleaner.
Oh - some bags for the vacuum cleaner - well, maybe I can find them for you.
  10. Me: Oh - some bags for the vacuum cleaner - well, maybe I can find them for you.
    Susy: No, please don't bother.
No bother at all... you know the other day my wife lost her only can opener... and you'll never guess where I found it...
  11. Me: No bother at all... you know the other day my wife lost her only can opener... and you'll never guess where I found it...
    Susy: In the washing machine?
That's right! Just thought you might have dones the same thing.
  12. Susy: Thank you. But I'd rather you didnt'look for them now.
Are you sure you weren't looking for something else, Mrs. Hendrix? [No reply] Are you sure you weren't looking... for a doll?
  13. Me: Are you sure you weren't looking for something else, Mrs. Hendrix? [No reply] Are you sure you weren't looking... for a doll?
Susy: A doll? I don't know what you mean.
A doll that your husband brought back from Canada... and which Mrs. Roat came here to collect the other night.
  14. Me: A doll that your husband brought back from Canada... and which Mrs. Roat came here to collect the other night.
Susy: My husband never knew Mrs. Roat.
We know he did. Mr. Roat now recognizes your husband from a photograph that his father has.
  15. Me: We know he did. Mr. Roat now recognizes your husband from a photograph that his father has.
Susy: You mean which he stole from our bedroom?
And the old man remembers seeing your husband and Mrs. Roat together several times. [No reply. Cross to safe, watching Susy closely.] Now where else might that doll be... in this safe perhaps?
  16. Me: And the old man remembers seeing your husband and Mrs. Roat together several times. [No reply. Cross to safe, watching Susy closely.] Now where else might that doll be... in this safe perhaps?
Susy: Why would my husband have put a doll in there?
And if he did you couldn't open it anyway, could you?
  17. Me: And if he did you couldn't open it anyway, could you?
Susy: Yes. As it so happens, I could.
    You could?
  18. Me: You could?
    Susy: Yes.
    Then will you open it?
  19. Me: Then will you open it?
    Susy: For you?
    Yes.
  20. Me: Then will you open it?
    Susy: For you?
    Me: Yes
    Susy: Now?
    Yes.
  21. Me: Yes.
Susy: Certainly not! You'll need a warrant for that and you know it.
Oh, we'll have a warrant in no time.
  22. Me: Oh, we'll have a warrant in no time.
Susy: Then you'll have to blast it open! You'll get no help from me!
It won't take us twenty minutes to drill that open and before your husband gets back. [Start up the stairs, then turn back.] And in the meantime you are not to leave this house.
  23. Me: It won't take us twenty minutes to drill that open and before your husband gets back. [Start up the stairs, then turn back.] And in the meantime you are not to leave this house.
Susy: Oh, Sergeant - is Mr. Roat still at the Sixth Precinct?
[A Pauce] He's probably left there by now. Why?
  24. Susy: I just wanted to tell him something - that is vvery important... could you give me his phone number please?
    His phone number?
  25. Me: His phone number?
Susy: Now you're not going to tell me he didn't give it to you.
Well of course he did - but I don't havei t on me. Maybe you can get it from Information. He lives in Scarsdale.
  26. Susy: I've already tried and it's not listed. Oh - I know how I can get it. [Starts dialing]
    What are you doing?
  27. Susy: 440-1234. They'll put me through to the Sixth Precinct and they can tell me Mr. Roat's phone number.
[Hurrying to the phone.] Look - that's only for police emergencies - I can dial my office direct. It's just possible he may still be there.
  28. Me: [Hurrying to the phone.] Look - that's only for police emergencies - I can dial my office direct. It's just possible he may still be there.
    Susy: Thank you.
[Pick up the phone and dial carefully from notebook.] Carlino... is Mr. Roat still there? ... No, the son... Mrs. Hendrix wants to speak to him. [Put phone in her hand.]
  29. Susy: ... [On phone] Mr Roat? My husband's friend, Mr. Talman, has just phone a lawyer and he has advised us that if your father makes any more accusations against my husband he will take immedate action... do you understand what I'm saying?  ...Thank you, Mr. Roat.
That lawyer friend isn't going to stop me, Mrs. Hendrix. And I'll be right back with... That might be for me.
  30. Me: That lawyer friend isn't going to stop me, Mrs. Hendrix. And I'll be right back with... [Just as I reach the door, phone rings.] That might be for me.
Susy: Hello... There's no answer... they must have hung up.
I'll be right back, Mrs. Hendrix - with a search warrant.
