  1. In 1st person look for... 
    I, me, my, we. 
  2. In 2nd person look for...
    You.
  3. In 3rd person limited look for... 
    The narrator not in the story. Reader only knows one character's thoughts (usually main character.)
  4. In 3rd person omniscient look for...
    No narrator in the story. Reader knows more than one characters thoughts and feelings.
  5. Man vs. Self (Internal)
    Character will be battling emotions inside self i.e. desire for independence or a desire to go out with something. Something "out of reach"
  6. External Conflict
    • Character battling something outside himself.
    • Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Science...
  7. How to identify theme...
    • -What the main character learned or how the main character changed
    • -Re-read first and last paragraphs of story
    • -Look at title; usually related
    • -Figure out conflict, closely related to theme
  8. Dramatic Irony...
    Reader knows something the character doesn't...
  9. Situational Irony...
    Opposite from the expected happens...
  10. Verbal Irony...
    Opposite of expected is said; sarcasm.
