What is a Helminth
Includes the nematodes (roundworms) and the platyhelminths (flatworms).
Platyhelminths consists of the cestodes (tapeworms) and the trematodes (flukes).
Symptoms and physical findings: abdominal pain, enlarged liver and spleen. Blood in the urine.The patient had taken a trip to Egypt over a year ago. During this trip they remembered developing a rash that eventually resolved.
Main species that cause human infection (Schistosomiasis)

- Schistosoma japonicum
Schistosomiasis How many at risk and how many thought to be infected? Deaths?
- Estimated 700 million people are at risk.
- 207-240 million are thought to be infected worldwide with 280,000 deaths annually.
What mainly causes symptoms in Schistosomiasis ?
Disease symptoms are caused mainly by reactions to the eggs released by the adult worms.
